09/21-10/10: Took a 2000 mile “side trip” on the
asphalt rivers of America. To Indy
for housekeeping & to spend some time with Bob & Barbara, then to Ft
Monroe, VA to pin silver leaves on
LTC Sweeney and visit with Meridian & her parents and then back to
Green Turtle, the boat & the Loop
10/10: Finally, “we feel the boat move, under our feet” as
we leave Green Turtle Bay to resume this leg of the voyage. Away at 1010 in bright sunlight on
clear, crisp morning. North winds
at 15+ provided following seas (a bit of surfing added a knot or two to our
most efficient cruising speed of 8 Knots/hour). Very light traffic; saw two tows and a small car ferry over
course of 6+ hours and a lot of small craft. Did hail & chat w/2 other Loopers (Sunshine and
Jet Stream) Arrived at Harmon
Creek MM 87, at 1540. Took almost
45 minutes to negotiate a very complex entry into anchorage area. Bonnie
says…Lazy day of cruisin’ down the river! Of course Lazy includes staying alert
to where one is on the river (charts and buoys) and plotting where you want to
spend the night---dockage or anchorage and then good area to dinghy the “girls”
ashore for their potty break. Once
anchored, this is a lovely spot, reminiscent of the Chesapeake Bay. Settled in
for a chilly evening but with side curtains lowered and zipped up, dinner
cooking on the gas burner, it was cozy warm. Had no cell or internet service-in
spite of our new” more powerful” antenna, so Kindle reading it was! Dinner:
Garlic beef and broccoli stir fry.
10/11:
Bonnie says......This morning, we were treated to the arrival of hundreds of white pelicans flying in and paddling around. Wading in the shallows were hundreds of white egrets. I was entranced. Thus our departure was delayed as I took pictures and videos! Our upriver cruise took us by heron rookeries and herons "greeting" along the way from pilings, tall day marks with their nests or staring from shore. there are MANY fishermen in their bass boats...one single fisherman had @ 8 poles he was "watching. Wonder what the work week is around here! Once at Cuba Landing enjoyed visiting with the German sailor we first met on the Illinois River-is a journalist for a German Sail magazine and contributes to US Sail magazine during return trips to Germany (cannot "work" when in US on visitor's visa). He left Germany in 2009. The other cruiser, Took the Plunge, originated near Detroit MI. The owners got tired of cold weather, quit their jobs, sold their home, bought a 47 ft cruiser and are headed to relocate inthe warmth of FL! Watched the VP debate on livestreaming on the laptop. Dinner: Indian Korma with pork and vegetables and tossed salad. The pork was left over from a 2" pork chop I had 10/9 at Patti's---great restaurant in Grand Rivers. You can imagine the size if the leftover fed 2 of us!!

Friday, 10/12, we are presently waiting out a storm system. Look on map for I-40. Where it crosses the Tennessee River is our current location, at Cuba Landing, TN. We have @165 miles to go to make the AGLCA Rendezvous 21 - 24 October. More to follow.
