05/20:
Departed Wabasso anchorage (MM943) at 0810 after a spectacular sunrise. Threatening skies all day, radar
showing numerous pop up Thunderstorms.
None found us, however, until 7.5 hours and 65 miles later when we were
securely attached to a mooring ball in the harbor at Titusville, FL. Passed numerous interesting places on
the way, the premier being the IMMENSE structures at Cape Canaveral, still
visible from our mooring. Was a “dark
& stormy night” – great sleeping weather & no bugs – and another lovely
sunrise. The
big decision of the day was between stopping at Cocoa (location of the “Best
Hardware Store” on the East coast-been there for 126 years and has more of
everything) or proceed on to Titusville, which had a Bark Park next to the
Marina. The latter won out, as we didn’t really need any hardware! As we
cruised north, viewing NASA, incl the shuttle launch pad, on the eastern
horizon is imposing. We wish we had planned an extra day to spend at the
Kennedy Space Center. The Titusville Municipal Marina provides a van ride for
$10 (plus the local businesses provide a free shuttle from the Marina to anywhere
in town). Will have to be planned stop on a FL road trip. Hmm, maybe we should visit
places “missed” due to a schedule-a no no when Looping-via the asphalt highway.
Wandering around the parks along the waterfront was cancelled as we scurried, via
dinghy, back to our mooring. There were strong storms all around us. Orlando
had golf size hail and all the radar had it coming right at us. Could view the
storms from afar but only light rain fell during the night. By the way,
catching a mooring ball when one has a boat hook is a piece of cake. Remember
Sarasota when I discovered we had lost ours as I was trying to capture one? We
now have 2!! Dinner: grilled
steaks, grilled potatoes and broccoli au gratin followed by Peanut Butter
Chocolate Gelato
Setting crab pots--so far we have been very fortunate NOT to get the prop tangled with one. Vigilence
This is the Viking Star--we met them in White Hall, MI last September. They completed the Loop in December and moored now near Melbourne. Recognized it as we cruised by. Unfortunately no one was aboard.
