05/17: Another fine day (see preceding days) had us bid farewell to our newest
on list of favorite anchorages. Got
another early start & this time had no mechanical gremlins to hold us
up. Finished going around south
side of L. Okeechobee (about 20 miles) and then 29 more plus another lock (#4
of 5). Currently in a Marina
operated by US Army Corps of Engineers as part of a campground integral to the
last lock at St Lucie. It is part
of the Nat’l Park System so our Golden Eagle (age 62+ card) gets us a 50% discount;
total with water & electric included = $12.00/day, $0.48/foot. Was particularly nice to have a shower
and shave after 4 days w/out.
Tomorrow we get to Stuart, FL and make the turn north and begin the
final (east) segment of the Loop. This Okeechobee WW has been seemingly slow and leisurely,
not per our cruising speed but the quiet nature preserves we cruised through.
If there was a town, it was small with minimal, if any, services. Old
Florida! This St Lucie Lock Campground and
Marina, while a marina, seems almost like anchoring out—has services but quiet.
There were a couple RV’s, one tent and 3 boats, incl us. The Sloop next to us
had completed the Loop in 2006. They live aboard here in this very affordable
marina @ 5 mos/year with frequent sailings to the Bahamas. The Captain did
share with us their story re: experiencing Hurricane Ivan, on the boat and up a
creek south of Demopolis. Was chilling to say the least. Dinner: Tortellini
Caesar Salad ala Tom Rohs!!

If you have a comment that includes a question we will strive to respond within a day or two. Please note however, sometimes Mom Nature or the gods of the WW Web conspire to delay that.
