Port St Joe to Dog Island 4/16/13

04/16:  Away as planned after pump in/pump out etc on a magnificent day to cruise thru the swamps and bogs of the GICW.   Bonnie has some great photos to attach in the Blog.  After a 62 mile, 9 hour
& 40 minute run we arrived at a lovely anchorage on Dog Island, just off the coast from Carrabelle.  The only other boat was a fishing skiff that left almost immediately.  Was nice to FINALY spend a night on the hook.  We dinghyed the dogs ashore, took a walk on the beach and then returned to the boat for cocktails & dinner.  Witnessed a magnificent sunset- more blog photos from Bonnie.  As Bill said, the swamps and bogs and oxbows were really lovely scenery to cruise by…lots of waterfowl.  I
had wanted to stop in Apalachicola—NOT for the oysters but to experience “old Florida” and be nostalgic for a college friend I had visited here in 1966. However, our 2 lay days of getting the truck to Gainesville and sitting out the Sunday storms gave me a choice—walk through an old town or on a barrier island beach? Chose the latter and was a fine decision—isn’t that what life is about? Decisions?
As we entered the cove I saw signs posted every 20 or so feet..hmmm, has access to the beach and island been limited? Once ashore with the Girls, one of the signs explained going beyond the beach was a temporary no no due to shore bird nesting (and there were many many sandpipers and gulls (not your average gull) clustered at various spots on the beach. The other sign was from the FL Conservancy saying No Trespassing! This was not as expected BUT just walking along the beach was full of aquatic wildlife---lots of hermit crabs in a variety of borrowed homes/shells and sponges. Had a lovely sunset---unfortunately pictures are on my phone and haven’t figured out how to synch them with this Blog…if on FB they are there. (they are on an Android Samsung galaxy phone, linked with google as is this blog-will work on that). Dinner: Salsbury steak with sautéed mushrooms and onions with thyme and rosemary and tossed green salad.

A true Oxbow and great angorage--the Cut eliminated all these "detours)

This shrimper spent the night with us but off Dog Island
