03/08: Away at 0830, clear, cold (33*) no wind. Into Lock at0830, out at 0910 on way to
Demopolis Marina @ 55 miles to the south.
Waterway essentially deserted; occasional clusters of riverside
dwellings, all on stilts, many connected double-wides, otherwise wilderness on
the banks. Met one tow northbound
and perhaps a total of 7-9 bass boats, most near Demopolis. Fifty-three miles later we arrived Demopolis
on time. New Marina is really
nice. Had interesting chat with
the Harbormaster. Their primary
source of income is not the Marina, rather they are a primary fuel stop for the
tow boats. While we were here we
filled up our tank with 25 gal of diesel, consumed over the115 miles since we left Columbus. They had a tow arrive from 112 miles
downstream and the filled it with 25,000 gal of diesel; no more bitchin from me about fuel
consumption. Today's cruising took us by 2 sections of white limestone
cliffs--opposite banks were trees on low lying banks. The first set were the
White Cliffs of Epes (AL) and the 2nd were downriver. The second had
interesting eroded shapes, like the Boar seen below. We have now
gone from Rustic Marina to Very Nice Marina:
all new, quality facilities-did laundry, took showers, cleaned the boat a bit,
romped the girls. Then headed, via golf cart, to the New Orleans Bar and Grill
and their Friday night special of boiled Shrimp—yum but only thing missing was
St Elmo’s Famous Sauce. Donna and I brought back 1 pound of shrimp—Bill ate his
pound. Expect a Cajun shrimp dish for Saturday night supper!
