07/03: Had a lazy AM following last night’s storm and
finally got moving across the Bay to our next stop @1045. Marine forecast called for winds 10 – 15
w/gusts to 20 and waves 1 to 3’. Under sunny
skies we actually experienced winds 5 – 10 and waves <2’; in all a piece of
cake for the 1.7 hours it took to travel the 15 miles to Herrington Harbor
South. We were greeted by Steve Capalbo
and secured to our dock by 1230. Spent the afternoon visiting with Steve and Carolyn
(army buddies from the Fort Ben days), dining on board their magnificent Island
Packet sloop following a ride to local supermarket to re-stock on provisions. We settled in for the night in anticipation
of Independence Day & the arrival in the neighborhood of Hurricane
Arthur. Bonnie: Well, who would have “thunk” that in 1993
when we celebrated the birth of the Capalbo Triplets and in 1998 enjoyed
meeting again on our chartered sloop at Clayton, NY on the St Lawrence that
we’d share a fun filled Fourth of July 2014 on the Chesapeake Bay!! Herrington
Harbor South is a lovely “destination Marina and Inn”: beautiful gardens,
several wedding venues, pool, Tiki Bar and restaurant, nice boater facilities
and great location on the Bay. Carolyn greeted us with her signature Strawberry
Margaritas-or were they Daiquiris?- and a delicious sautéed in butter Salmon
filet. YUMMM.
07/04: Independence Day. Dawn found us awaiting the effects of Arthur in a well
sheltered Marina in about the middle of the Chesapeake Bay. Herrington
Harbor South is among the top three Marinas we have visited in over 7,500 miles
on the Loop; impeccably maintained facilities AND Landscaped surroundings,
friendly and competent staff, and filled with sociable seasonal slip holders
Today/tonight Art should pass by our location pretty far offshore to the east
if current predictions remain valid. Forecast has us with gale force
winds (@ 40-50 mph) and lots of rain; neither is particularly worrisome. Forecast was partially correct – very much
wind – but, no rain. Lazed about,
decided to stay on thru Saturday, grilled some steaks and again dined with
Steve & Carolyn on board Evolution.
Closed out the day with a fine fireworks display above the Marina. Bonnie: What can I add to all that!!!!
07/05: Dawn brought cool breezes, great after the heat &
humidity of preceding days, and enough to provide for a leisurely day sail with
Steve, Carolyn and 3 of their friends from the neighborhood-bright sun, blue
skies and many sails on the horizon or closer. Back in Harbor @1500, returned to boat, &
then the Capalbo’s picked us up in their
speedboat (24’ Sea Ray runabout) for a trip across Herring Bay to a waterside
pub with good food, great music and lots of boaters and/or wannabees. In the AM we resume the Loop. Bonnie: Many ask if I miss sailing. Yes, I miss the
beauty and grace when under sail. This afternoon was a wonderful reminder of
that and I relished every minute of it, especially when hanging out at the bow
as the Evolution cut through the Bay’s waters. A fun “sidebar” to our dining at
Skippers: there were TWO Capalbos there that evening. Carolyn and Steve Capalbo
met
Jill and Joe Capalbo! All from NYC area and definitely cousins by a
still to be determined degree of separation!!! All came about due to confused/blended
bar tab!!!!!
